Pivot Pins

Alcon Post #6

Tool Highlight
"Dry" 1.75 x 6.13” Pin
"Wet" Pin

Alcon manufactures lots of pivot pins for earth moving equipment and heavy machinery. These pins are typically used in coupler and machine joints. Pins require high tensile strength alloy steel and can be induction hardened to improve wear resistance. We produce what are referred to as "wet" and "dry" pins, per customer request. "Dry" pins are lubricated through zerk fittings attached to the coupler or machine arm, whereas "wet" pins have a deep hole drilled along the center axis with a small cross hole located midway along the length. The zerk fitting on wet pins is installed in one end of each pin.

Pins are just one of many products that Alcon regularly produces. Visit our website to learn more and contact us today!

How to Insert Score Slitters into a Pneumatic Lever

Alcon Post #4

How-To Video for Pneumatic Levers

Pneumatic Lever

The only tools required for inserting a score slitter into a pneumatic holder are your hands and a block of wood or rubber to form a firm non-damaging surface.

Here are the instructions for inserting a score slitter into a pneumatic lever:

  1. Insert the bearing into the center hole of the score slitter. This should be done using only thumb pressure. If more force is required, the center hole may be too small or you have the wrong bearing.
    1. Pneumatic holders generally use one of two different size bearings: the smaller bearing is 19 mm (.748") in diameter, and the larger one is 22 mm (.866") in diameter
    2. *If your operation produces a fair amount of dust, you should choose a sealed bearing.
  2. Insert the axle into the center hole of the bearing.
  3. Insert the slitter, bearing, and axle assembly into the holder with the axle aligned with the slot of the forks and then press the knife against the block of wood or rubber to seat the axle into the forks.
The knife should rotate free when properly assembled.

Bias Cutters

Alcon Post #3

Tool Highlight

96C150 model, 96 tooth Bias Cutter

Bias cutter knives were the first product made by Alcon Tool Company. These knives are used in the production of tires and other rubber products where raw rubber is laminated to a polyester or cotton fabric and then cut on the "bias" to the size required for processing down-stream.

These blades rotate at a very high speed which assists in reducing the amount of "pick-up" of raw rubber on the blade. These knives can be Teflon coated or chrome plated, which further reduces the amount of rubber on the blade. Sharpening between the teeth enhances the cutting action and reduces the amount of distortion to the laminated material. M-2 High Speed steel is used to maintain a sharp edge for as long as possible.

Alcon provides bias cutters with 48, 60, 72, and 96 teeth, with 48 and 72 teeth being the most common designs chosen. Of course, special designs are available.

Pinvent Trimming Blade

Alcon Post #2

Tool Highlight

This particular pin vent is a 2001A model

The final stage of molding a tire requires extra material to flow out of the mold. This extra material insures that no voids are produced, which would make the tire unusable. In many cases, the extra material flows out of a vent in the shape of a pin, hence the name pin vent.

Alcon's pinvent trimmer blades are used by the tire manufacturer to remove those pinvents prior to delivery to the end user. These blades are made from M-2 High Speed Steel, ensuring high quality strength, durability, and high levels of productivity. While the majority of pinvent trimmer blades are used in machine automated tool holders, Alcon also produces handles that allow for the tires to be trimmed by hand. In addition to the full layout of pinvent trimmer sizes shown on our website, any desired custom modifications can be made to fit the needs of the customer.
