How to Insert Score Slitters into a Pneumatic Lever

Alcon Post #4

How-To Video for Pneumatic Levers

Pneumatic Lever

The only tools required for inserting a score slitter into a pneumatic holder are your hands and a block of wood or rubber to form a firm non-damaging surface.

Here are the instructions for inserting a score slitter into a pneumatic lever:

  1. Insert the bearing into the center hole of the score slitter. This should be done using only thumb pressure. If more force is required, the center hole may be too small or you have the wrong bearing.
    1. Pneumatic holders generally use one of two different size bearings: the smaller bearing is 19 mm (.748") in diameter, and the larger one is 22 mm (.866") in diameter
    2. *If your operation produces a fair amount of dust, you should choose a sealed bearing.
  2. Insert the axle into the center hole of the bearing.
  3. Insert the slitter, bearing, and axle assembly into the holder with the axle aligned with the slot of the forks and then press the knife against the block of wood or rubber to seat the axle into the forks.
The knife should rotate free when properly assembled.

Bias Cutters

Alcon Post #3

Tool Highlight

96C150 model, 96 tooth Bias Cutter

Bias cutter knives were the first product made by Alcon Tool Company. These knives are used in the production of tires and other rubber products where raw rubber is laminated to a polyester or cotton fabric and then cut on the "bias" to the size required for processing down-stream.

These blades rotate at a very high speed which assists in reducing the amount of "pick-up" of raw rubber on the blade. These knives can be Teflon coated or chrome plated, which further reduces the amount of rubber on the blade. Sharpening between the teeth enhances the cutting action and reduces the amount of distortion to the laminated material. M-2 High Speed steel is used to maintain a sharp edge for as long as possible.

Alcon provides bias cutters with 48, 60, 72, and 96 teeth, with 48 and 72 teeth being the most common designs chosen. Of course, special designs are available.
